Fun Fact about XÚC XẮC /suk sɑk/
The term “XÚC XẮC” also describes the sound of coins in the folk song “XÚC XẮC XÚC XẺ.”
Before red envelopes became popular, Vietnamese children had a charming tradition: carrying two bamboo tubes filled with coins and making a clicking sound as they went around the village on New Year’s Eve, singing: “Xúc xắc xúc xẻ, nhà nào còn lửa, mở cửa cho chúng tôi…” (Shake and rattle, if there’s still fire in the house, open the door for us…).
Today, this tradition of carrying bamboo tubes to celebrate the Lunar New Year has completely faded, even in remote villages.
